About the tool

Is it free?

Yes. The checker is free to use, with no account and no sign-up. You can check as many quotes as you like.

Does it tell me if the price is fair?

No. We have no verified local price data, and a made-up number would mislead you. The checker shows what the quote includes, what is missing and what to ask, so you can compare quotes on the same scope.

Which quotes does it work for?

Residential AC, furnace and heat pump replacement quotes in the United States, including split systems and ductless mini-splits. Repairs, commercial jobs and new construction are not covered yet.

What does the completeness score mean?

It adds up the weights of the 14 scope items your quote clearly includes, out of 100. A high score means the quote is specific about the work; it says nothing about the price or the contractor. How the score works.

Your quote and privacy

Do you store my quote?

No. Quote text, photos and PDFs are read in your browser and are never sent to our server. Close or reload the page and everything you entered is gone. Read the privacy policy.

If nothing is uploaded, how does photo reading work?

The text-reading software downloads to your browser the first time you choose a photo, then runs on your device. Your image is processed there and never leaves it.

Can I save or share my results?

You can copy a plain-text summary or print the results to PDF. Saved checks and shareable links are planned for later, and they will also keep your data on your device.

Reading a quote

What should I tick if a line in my quote is vague?

Leave it unticked. Only tick an item when the quote clearly says it is included. A vague line becomes a question to ask, which is the point.

What is a load calculation, and why does it matter?

It is a room-by-room estimate of how much heating and cooling your home needs, usually called Manual J. Without one, the system size is often a guess based on square footage.

What do SEER2 and HSPF2 mean on my quote?

They are efficiency ratings: SEER2 for cooling, HSPF2 for heat pump heating. Higher is more efficient. Check that the rating on the quote matches the exact model numbers listed.

Contractors and permits

Do I need a permit to replace my AC or furnace?

In most places, yes, but rules are set by your city or county. Ask who pulls the permit and whether it is in the price, and confirm with your local building department.

How much deposit is normal?

It varies, and some states limit how much a contractor can ask for upfront on home-improvement work. The checker flags deposits above 30% so you can ask for a schedule tied to delivery and completion.

Do you recommend contractors?

No. We do not rate, rank or recommend contractors, and we do not sell your details to anyone. The checker helps you ask every contractor the same questions.
